Introduction
This report provides a written introduction to Māori Genuine Progress Indicator (mGPI) accounting as an alternative to GDP based National Accounting in New Zealand. mGPI accounting more appropriately measures the wellbeing and cultural survival aspirations of Māori communities. This report introduces this subject matter by explaining.
(i) Just where this new approach to accounting sits in terms of well-established and emerging thinking/practice on National Accounting (sections 2-4).
(ii) The role of Māori community innovation and knowledge development in mGPI accounting (section 5)
(iii) What we hope the use of mGPI accounting will achieve (section 6). To set the scene for a more detailed exploration of mGPI accounting (sections 2-6), the remainder of this first report section provides a brief historical narrative and introduction to key ideas.
